"Walking over Lemons", Alpujarra Hiking Weeks with Chris Stewart

Spanish Highs have teamed up with writer Chris Stewart & delightful accommodation at Casa Ana to bring guided walking holidays in the Alpujarras The holiday The Alpujarra is one of Spain’s most spectacular and unspoilt walking areas, with hikes in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and rambles through the meadows, orchards and white villages. A cold and blustery winter night camping out in the Sierra Nevada

A cold and blustery winter night camping out in the Sierra Nevada

Camping out in the mountains is not always for those long summer days. Want to try out camping in the snow clad mountains of the Sierra Nevada. With careful planning and foresight great experiences are to be had during the winter months. We recently had a client who wanted to try out camping in the snow clad mountains of the Sierra Nevada. N.B Remember that certain rules apply to camping in the Sierra Nevada National Park (see foot of article)

One man and his dog for 3 days on the Sulayr trek, Sierra Nevada

One man and his dog for 3 days on the Sulayr trek, Sierra Nevada

Describes a 3 day trek between Bayárcal and Trevelez on the long distance path, the “Sulayr”, around Spain’s Sierra Nevada National Park Thanks to Ian Tupman (and Meg of course!) for the following report detailing their experiences._ N.B Spanish Highs support sections of this route either guided or self guided. Our border collie, Meg, is now fourteen months old. When we got her, the intention was that she would come with me on longer walks when she was older.

My Favourite Walk in Las Alpujarras

My Favourite Walk in Las Alpujarras

I have done this walk in Las Alpujarras at every time of the year but, in my opinion, it is best undertaken in the autumn On this occasion, I was accompanied by Meg, our border collie pup. Words and photos from guest writer, Ian Tupman I parked the car at the Hoya del Magalite, a group of cortijos just off the GR413, approximately 10km north of Almegíjar . From here we took the track heading west along the north side of the Sierra de Mecina.

Snowshoeing in the forests of the Alpujarras

Snowshoeing in the forests of the Alpujarras

There is no finer place to enjoy a day’s snowshoeing after recent snowfall than above Puente Palo in the pine forests of the Alpujarras Last week we were privileged to enjoy the company of a family from the USA, as we guided them on a days snowshoeing. We parked at the recreation site at Puente Palo, above the village of Cañar. We accessed on another dirt track from Lanjaron. With care a normal saloon car could reach this spot but the road conditions do deteriorate depending on the severity of recent rains.

The highest mountains are not necessarily always the best

The highest mountains are not necessarily always the best

Here in southern Spain’s Alpujarras we have been enjoying the relatively unknown delights of an fascinating little peak called Giralda. The highest mountains sometimes fail to live up to their status, whilst some relatively unknown peaks turn out to be lesser in height only. Here in southern Spain’s Alpujarras, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, we have for some years now been enjoying the delights of an fascinating little peak called Giralda.

A walk along the GR7 long distance path in the Alpujarras

A walk along the GR7 long distance path in the Alpujarras

A favourite walk in the Alpujarras is from Capileira to Lanjaron along the GR7. Passes through spectacular scenery and white villages and is mostly downhill! Villages on the GR7 long distance path through the Alpujarras are conveniently placed about 2 hours apart. These provide welcome rest halts or overnight stops as one passes through the area. Our personal favourite is back from Capileira via Bubion, Pampaneira, Soportujar and Cañar to Lanjaron.
