Southern Patagonian Icefield Enhanced

A collection of some of our favorite images from last years expedition to the Southern Patagonian Icefield.

Last years trip to the Southern Patagonian Icefield was of of the most memorable expeditions we have ever been on. The contrast from the previous battering that the weather elements gave us in 2010 was marked. Unfortunately we are not going back in 2012 as we originally intended. Hopefully November/December 2013?

I recently came across the new Snapseed application from Nik Software and ran it through some of our photos from 2011. The application helps bring out the textures in the clouds and snow. Especially useful for landscape and mountain photographers, even the point and press variety such as myself. The application is simple, quick and intuitive to use. I found that by sharpening and adding drama to the scene the original images became more “interesting”. Certainly worth the €15 to buy it.

Here are some of the features, although to date I have only experimented with a couple.

  • TILT-SHIFT – MINIATURIZE YOUR WORLD. Create the classic compressed depth of field look of a miniature set or emulate the swings and tilts of a large format camera.

  • CROP, ROTATE AND STRAIGHTEN. Easily crop images freely or use standard aspect ratios to remove distracting parts of your photo, and rotate or straighten photos with simple clicks. It’s all easy, fast, and effective.

  • DETAILS – SHARPEN YOUR PHOTO. Use either a traditional sharpening approach or the unique Structure control found in the professional Nik Software product line to enhance the details in your photo. Use the included Loupe to see details at 100% while enhancing your photo.

  • BLACK AND WHITE – THE CLASSIC. Give that classic Black and White look to your photos with this darkroom-inspired filter. Click to select a style, and then experiment with how grainy you want your photo to appear. Finish off by making it darker or lighter, adjusting contrast, or adding a smooth vignette for that perfectly nostalgic look.

  • CENTER FOCUS – GRAB THEIR ATTENTION. Draw attention to the subject of your photo by clicking on your subject and blurring the surrounding background.

  • ORGANIC FRAMES – THE FINISHING TOUCH. Add stylized borders to your photos by choosing a style and texture. Easily adjust the width and white space around your photo, or randomize your border with a simple click.

  • SHARE AND SHARE ALIKE. Use Snapseed to show off your creations, email them, or share on Facebook, Flickr, and more. Even print your photos on your local printer.

The album below is the result. Hope you like it.
