Remote Walking in the Sierra de Almijara

Walking in the Sierra de Almijara, Andalucia

The Sierra de Almijara stretches between the coastal strip near Nerja and the town of Alhama de Granada to the north. On the east side of the range there is the lovely, very spanish, hill town of Otivar, our base. The walking in the Almijara is surprisingly rugged. Any time of year is good to visit this range, the mountains of which rise to 2000 metres. Normal access is made from the south but we prefer the quieter and remoter access from the north and east.

Nearing the Rio Verde Ascents of the main peaks can be undertaken, including a long and remote walk over the top of Navachica. Our support vehicles allow traverses to be completed so we dont always have to return to the same point. There is the possibility of some spectacular walking alongside the gorge of the Rio Verde. We have also discovered some interesting ridge scrambling high above Otivar. This area suits those who like quiet walking in little known surroundings. The days can be made as long or as short to suit.

We stay in a 2 star clean and comfortable hotel in Otivar, which we make as our base for the trip.
