Mid June hardly seems the correct time to be looking for winter climbing in southern Spain. Yet, we managed, after an early start, to find good snow and ice conditions high in the Sierra Nevada on the Tajos de la Virgen ridge.

Above Puente Palo in the Alpujarras lies a winter wonderland of fun and beautiful scenery. Against a backdrop of adverse mountain snow conditions we had headed upwards to the Cebollar hut. But what turned out was a day full of surprises as we enjoyed the mountaineering and winter potential of the Sierra Nevada.
Photos from our guide, Jens Foell and clients Andy Ward and Joe on a recent exhilarating ski descent from the summit of Mulhacen, highest mountain in Spain. Setting off from Capileira and staying at the Poqueira hut overnight. See the ski video!

Theres nothing like the mountains after fresh snowfall. These photos were taken in February 2011 on the northern bowls of Veleta in the Sierra Nevada. High winds added to the day. Superb views over to the highest peaks of Veleta, Alcazaba and Mulhacen.
