Conditions for an ascent of Mulhacen from Trevelez - elperronegro - 05-25-2011 10:40 AM

Just received the following from a guy who wants to ascend Mulhacen this coming weekend from Trevelez. His question and our reply may be useful for others hence the post here.

Hi,
I'm considering hiking Mulhacen in this weekend (28-29 May), leaving Trevelez and back there. What conditions should I expect? Would I need an ice axe, crampons, a helmet and heavy, high mountain shoes? What is a risk of avalanches?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Konrad

Hi Konrad
What route are you taking from Trevelez to Mulhacen?
Very little snow if up to Alta de Chorrillo and south ridge. If via Siete Lagunas then maybe crampons and axe useful. Helmet...no.
No avalanche risk if you stick to normal routes.
Regards
