AEMET has issued an alert for extreme cold weather throughout Spain this coming few days. In the Sierra Nevada conditions will be arctic! On Mulhacen and above 3000m air temps may be between -15 and -20 and together with strong winds, 40-60km/hr+ will give extreme windchill. In those conditions no part of the body should be exposed. The cold will ease over the weekend.

THE METEOROLOGICAL AGENCY REPORTS:
1 .- Weather phenomenon: Cold wave.
2 .- Geographical scope : Peninsula and Balearic Islands.
3 .- Beginning of the situation: Thursday, February 2, on the northeast peninsula.
4 .- Duration: Until Sunday, day 5, at least.
5 .- Degree of probability: Very likely (70-90%).
6 .- Location of the weather: From the next morning will be a cold air intake from the European continent, driven by winds from the North, will affect the Peninsula and Balearic Islands, recorded very low temperatures, well below the usual for these dates.
The outbreak of cold air will begin this morning in the northeast peninsula, extending along the Thursday and Friday throughout the Peninsula and Balearic Islands, with widespread frosts, which even reached broad coastal Bay of Biscay, Mediterranean and Balearic Islands. Minimum temperatures are expected C/-10 -5 ° C and maximum not exceeding 3 ° C / 5 ° C over large areas of the interior. Lower values will take place on Friday and Saturday in areas of the northern half, where, locally, the maximum shall not exceed 0 ° C. During the whole episode in high areas of the Peninsula will be less than the minimum -10 ° C, even in high mountain areas could reach temperatures of about -20 ° C.
Between this afternoon and early morning hours of Thursday the passage of a front from north to south through the Peninsula rainfall will lead to weak, with the snow level down to sea level in the northern peninsula and about 600 m in the southeast . Later, because of the continental air mass, cold and dry, no rain is expected only in the Peninsula, except in the eastern Cantabrian Sea, east of Catalonia and the Balearics, where snow can occur at any altitude.
