Your Winter Wish List
Happy New Year/!Feliz año nuevo a todos!
Now that the seasonal festivities are almost over, thoughts turn to getting out and about in the winter wonderland of the Sierra Nevada. Sure, we could do with some more snow at the moment but there are still good conditions at high level and using the ‘refugios’ as a base opens up opportunities for some great days out.
Here are my top five objectives for this winter
• Night ascent of Mulhacén for the sunrise
• Traverses of Puntal de la Caldera and Raspones de Rio Seco
• Ice climbing
• Ski touring
• Snowshoeing in the pine forest above Hoya del Portillo

So, what’s on your Winter Wish List this year?

Feliz Año and good question Tuppers,
For me, if there is not much further snow in January then I would want to do arista de Raspones de Rio Seco.

When the snow arrives..........
Start Hoya de la Mora, ski Pico del Cartujo, descent west to Collado de Chaquetas. Pick up at Collado de Sevilla, Trevenque area.

Also try out winter climbs east of Caballo, Tajos Altos, Cartujo ridge.

Also interested in Veta Grande and north ridge of Cerro de los Machos.

RE: Your Winter Wish List
Happy New Year to you too.

Good question Tuppers and here come my answers :-

I would like to go camping with Khumbu.
I would like to go to areas of the Sierra Nevada I have not been to before.
I would like to just go wandering around the Sierra Nevada without any objection and see where I end up.
I would like to conquer my fear of skiing (preferably ski touring and not piste) and start to enjoy it rather than fear it.
I would also like to go ice climbing in the Sierra Nevada.
Oh and one other thing, id like to do a timelapse of the Sierra Nevada!

Lets hope 2012 allows for some of these Dodgy

RE: Your Winter Wish List
I have a 2 day beginner rock climbing course next week 11th and 12th. The following week I am hoping to get up to do the Raspones ridge and also have a look at the gullies. Not sure what dates, maybe weather dependent. You in?

RE: Your Winter Wish List
It looks like last weekend's snow was the last of the winter and spring has finally arrived. So, I thought I'd look back to my list of objectives for the winter and see how many I achieved.
The traverses of Puntal de la Caldera and Raspones didn't happen because of either bad weather or doing other stuff when the weather was good. However, we did 'discover' Peñón de la Mata and had some great scrambling there with the prospect of more later in the year.
Ice climbing wasn't done due to lack of ...ice! It was the driest (and possibly the warmest) winter I can remember here so hopefully we're in for a better one next year.
Ski touring as such was limited by poor snowfall but we did manage a good day out around the ski area after it had closed in early April.
Snowshoeing was enjoyed a couple of weeks ago in fresh powder snow around Hoya del Portillo.
And Mulhacén? Well, no night ascent but I did make my fifth ascent in winter conditions and flew my paraglider from just below the summit. Definitely the high-point of my winter.
So, I hope everyone has a great summer and roll on the autumn and winter 2012 for more fun in the Sierra Nevada.
