The poor state of unguarded Sierra Nevada refugios
The Elorietta and Caballo huts are getting in a worse and worse state each year. They were always quite rough places to sleep but of late have deteriorated markedly.

Latest shot from the Elorietta shows the ceiling collapsing and bringing in snow, the first time I can remember this happening.

Now the Caballo. I am aware we have been missing a door for the last few years so expect the snow to get in BUT which morons left all that litter? No excuses!

Whos responsible for the huts? National Park, Media Ambiente? Andaluzia Mountain Federation? Us?

Maybe we should have a "clean up" day in the summer when we ascend the peak, have a great day out but also tidy the place up. I'm in. Anybody else?

Great idea, maybe we can put a notice up telling people to take their litter out with them. Idiots.

We have got together a group of like minded people from Lanjaron and aim to go to the refugio de Caballo in the next few weeks to survey requirements. In August we intend to perform the clean up and repair work.

More details can be found http://www.sierra-nevada-news.com/2011/0...e-caballo/

We have inspected the refuge in the last couple of days. Somebody has already made an effort to tidy up the litter. Many thanks whoever you are!

Seems like we just need to fix the door and window areas. Maybe a bit of paint. Now need to organise the cement, mule etc.
