Sleeping Bag recommendations

Im about to splash out on a new 3 season sleeping bag, do you have any recommendations? I'm a cold sleeper , Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

We use a company called PHD Designs http://www.phdesigns.co.uk/sleepingbags.php?cat=26 They are reasonably priced, you can design your own ie have more fill underneath or where ever you want it. Have a look at their website. Also check their bargain box out, its under the News section, you may pick up a bargain there. They are well made and they post real quick, also if you want to speak to them they are great on the phone too.

To give you some idea of warmth grading, I used the PHD Minim 600 (standard fill) in Patagonia on the ice and was plenty warm enough. (I sleep hot). I didnt need my down jacket or trousers on.

Take a look at Mountain Hardwear's ''Lamina'' range, they are really compressible compared to other synthetic bags and also reasonably priced.

The Lamina 20 is the 3 season bag of the range, I think it was on sale at Cotswold Outdoor recently, might be worth taking a look (get 10% discount online as well).

No doubt you've got a new bag by now. But for what it's worth I spent ages looking for a replacement for my go anywhere and do most things Mountain Equipment Lightline Sleeping Bag (a classic in its day). And, I found it - the Western Mountaineering Ultralite Bag.

BRILLIANT and at about 800g the best bit of gear I've used in a long time. Light enough for high summer in most places but warm enough for Scottish winter or early spring in the Sierras.. Trouble is, it blows a big hole in your bank account.

Do you mind me asking how much you paid and where the supply came from Dave. Sounds very interesting? Thinking of maybe for our next trip to Patagonia. If it could cope with scottish winter then it should be ok for Patagonian spring.

I bought it in Feb 2010 from V12 Outdoor a relatively new store in Llanberis, North Wales for £321.83. I might have got it slightly cheaper on the web, but I wanted to see it properly before splashing out that amount of money - I also fancied a big breakfast at Pete's Eats (yes, still there) and a trot up the hill.

A quick search shows http://www.webtogs.co.uk selling it for about £325 on line.

My wife bought a Western Mountaineering Sleeping Bag in Calgary back in about 1993 and we were very impressed. As a Californian company they don't seem to get much of a mention in Europe, but as far as Down stuff is concerned they are hard to beat. Mind you, if you are happy with the PHD bags you might as well use them again.

Depending on what you read the Ultralite is rated to about -9. All I know is that I was reasonably comfortable on some bitterly cold nights this winter and last in Scotland. On one trip, my wife was starting to feel cold in her massive Mountain Equipment Snowline. So, it just goes to show that everyone is different in terms of feeling the cold.

Richard, I'm looking to get my wife a new Sleeping Bag for her birthday and I notice that RAB Quantum 400 Bags are on sale at various on line and real shops for less than £200 because RAB have just brought out a new funky version called "Neutrino Quantum 400".

Rated to about -4 this could be the really good value top quality bag to go for. And certainly cheaper than the Western Mountaineering Bag I mentioned earlier.
