Petzl reveals different way of tying onto a rope for glacier travel
Well this is new to me anyway! I'm a traditionalist by nature and always tie into our parties into a rope the same way that has been used for generations. The front and back man tie rethreaded figure of eights, take in coils and tie off with a loop back into the centre harness. The middle men tie in using either a figure of eight or an alpine butterfly (better).

The photo below shows how Petzl, in their latest gear brochure, suggest you tie in. Interesting! They just use the main climbing rope with no karabiners, which is good and maybe an improvement. However, against this, the centre of gravity is lowered and escaping the system, especially for the middle man, may be more difficult.

Anybody got any comments on this?
