Italian climber rescued from Sierra Nevada
An Italian climber was rescued Thursday afternoon by the Guardia Civil Mountain Rescue after he was trapped at about 2,800m on the slopes of the Mulhacen in the Sierra Nevada.

This was reported to the 112 service in the morning at 12.40.

Apparently the man was trapped in a area surrounded wall by mountains and suffered some kind of difficulty that he could not get out of. Details are sketchy at present.

Until the area known as the Chorreras de Mosca on the northern flanks of the mountain. The rescue teams managed to evacuate the trapped man and take to Granada airport.

Once at the airport, the emergency services attended the man, who was found to be generally in good condition, but showed signs of hypothermia.

RE: Italian climber rescued from Sierra Nevada
According to today's 'Ideal' newspaper, the 25 year old Italian was hoping to walk from Guejar Sierra to the summit of Mulhacen (via the north face) and then return to Guejar Sierra. He had not told anyone of his intended route He had a home-made ice axe and no crampons. At 2,800m he found himself unable to retreat or advance and so called the emergency services on 112.

Here is a photo of his homemade axe! My view for what it's worth ...... I guess it is better than nothing but if everything worked he wouldn't have had to be rescued? Room for a mountain of discussion this!

RE: Italian climber rescued from Sierra Nevada
A nice post script to this story. The helicopter used to rescue the young Italian had just been brought into service and this was it's first rescue mission. At the formal presentation of the aircraft to the Guardia Civil, the young lad was presented with an ice axe by the mountain rescue team. If you were wondering what his home-made 'axe' was made from, apparently it's the leg of a bed!
