Avalanche risk - San Juan bowls north of Veleta
Overnight snow has been blown off ridges which in places are hard and icy. We have been in the San Juan bowls ski touring today. Almost 50cm new blown snow fills the bowls and thus care is required in choosing where to enter as some large build ups occur.
The new blown snow overlays a hard icy base. Some windslab was noticed above 2800m on western facing slopes. Although today we had a lull, tomorrow the bad weather returns with a vengence. Maybe up to 50mm precipitation on both Tuesday and Wednesday will deposit large dumps of snow. Extreme avalanche danger is bound to be present for the next week or so. Best sit out in some friendly tapas bar!
